Welcome Refugees as Jesus Welcomes All
President Trump’s recent executive order allows each state to decide whether to accept or turn away refugees. Gov. Lee must decide by Christmas day if Tennessee will continue participating in our nation's refugee resettlement program.
Add your name (and personal comment) to the open letter below to Gov. Lee to urge him to welcome refugees as we as people of faith are called to do.
As Christians, we are called to welcome the stranger and care for the least of these. President Trump’s recent executive order allows each state to decide whether to accept or deny refugees. This is your decision. As a Christian, this should not be a hard decision, yet, you hesitate.
This order requires that you act by Christmas day. The significance of this day is important. Will you act as the uncharitable innkeeper who turned away Mary and Joseph or will you welcome the refugee, the stranger among us, who journeys to find a place to lay their head?
As we prepare for the sacred season of Advent, we anticipate the coming of Jesus as a newborn baby. We reflect each week in Advent on hope, love, joy, and peace. We celebrate what we see in the eyes of refugees: the hope for a better life, the love of family, the joy of safety and security, and peace in a peaceful country.
Gov. Lee, we ask that you choose hope over despair. Love over fear. Joy over grief. Peace over persecution. We urge you to recognize our shared humanity, to respond with compassion, and choose to welcome refugees as Jesus welcomes us.
